INFO / BIO

Roxy's life began on a world called Aravan, tucked away in some forgotten corner of nowhere, home not to humans and elves and dwarves like most worlds but only to the Jinn. In fact, the entire world was itself a living being with which the Jinn shared a symbiotic relationship: the homeworld able to live because of its inhabitants, and by its energy being the only place that a Jinn can live without granting wishes. The Jinn were a peaceful people who valued harmony over all else - but that was eventually their downfall, because while incredibly powerful beings in their own right, the greatest weakness of Jinn magic is that it is incapable of directly harming another person. So when they were finally found by malevolent forces and invaded, they were able to enchant weapons and use those - but their opponents were trained and practiced in combat. And so one by one, the Jinn fell.
Aravan was not only decimated - the life force within the world went out entirely. Victorious and gleeful to have left nothing but destruction in her wake yet again, the warlord Vela collected her spoils of war and returned to her stronghold. Roxy herself, knocked unconscious in the hiding place where soldiers had already cut down four of her eleven siblings, counted among her prizes.
When the Jinn awoke, it was in a lavish, private, and most importantly heavily guarded chamber. Vela had decided to play the gracious host, and spun Roxy a tale of having saved her from a war-torn world, explaining away her lack of memories as the result of an attack gone astray instead of the malicious work of magic it had really been. She told her that the Jinn were loathed and hunted throughout the worlds and so Roxy would have to stay with her, as an honored guest for the rest of her life. It seemed like a good deal, and grateful to her supposed rescuer, Roxy accepted.
The peace here didn't last long. Vela declared that she would not be making any wishes, but knowing that Jinn could not survive without granting enough, offered slaves up instead. Eager to make the lives of the slaves easier, especially since she had quickly started to get close with some of them, Roxy agreed. However being young for a Jinn and without her memories, she didn't fully understand the extent to which the 'catch' of each wish would grow in severity based on the scale of the wish itself. The first five slaves wished for and were granted their freedom - and not one of them lived longer than another day after that.
It was this event, and the aftermath of it, that really set the mood for what would become the next century. Devastated by what her power had done, Roxy asked that some kind of memorial be set up for the five slaves, only to have her wishes shrugged off. The slaves were terrified of her immediately, refusing to speak any longer to what they had among themselves decided was some kind of evil spirit in disguise. Over time, Roxy became less Vela's guest and more her pet - her concerns laughed off, her questions ignored. Indeed, she found soon that if she became too unruly then her guards would simply tell her that all the slaves in the stronghold were conveniently too busy for a few days, the next time she needed the sustenance of their wishes. And yet she was expected still to smile when she was dressed up in strange jewelled outfits and carted around to be shown off. Having a Jinn by her side made Vela more powerful, after all.
Without a friend in the world, homesick for a place she had no memories of, Roxy was miserable. Which was why she was so eager to leave when a strange young man who introduced himself as Isaac invaded the stronghold seemingly singlehandedly. The two of them fled her chamber and made it unmolested all the way through to the main gates of the stronghold before they were stopped, surrounded by Vela and another detachment of soldiers. Escape seemed impossible. Clearly sure she had won, Vela called out a wish that Roxy return to her chambers and never think of leaving again - and by now Roxy knew that a wish that infringed on the free will of another would exact an enormous price. Enough at least for Isaac to escape. Isaac countered by wishing instead that they two were at the helm of his ship - his ship that shimmered out of invisibility directly above them.
On board the Encanto, over time, Roxy learned what it was to be an actual guest. Somebody who was wanted around. Isaac explained that he was an explorer, simply wandering between the worlds, and thanked her for providing him with something to look for in her lost homeworld. Still, he told a story sometimes about a young couple, in which the young girl vanished as a result of a curse after her brother betrayed their forbidden meetings to her mother - and Roxy thought that perhaps he was looking for her too.
Since that time, the two have visited many worlds and begun to take on a small collection of displaced passengers. A down-on-his-luck fairy bard named Tio who quickly demonstrated his proclivity for practical jokes; three naiad sisters named Olivia, Louisa and Juliette, choked by the pollution of recklessly-led dwarven industry on their homeworld, who between them eagerly took up the duties of the ship's kitchen; an elf named Nadir with blue-black skin and milky white eyes, persecuted simply for being the offspring of warring families, who was never seen with a brush in his hand but always seemed to be missing right before another huge mural was found on a wall previously bare. Things have been relatively calm, but for the rumblings they've heard on various worlds of the defeated warlord Vela gathering power and resources in the interest of revenge against the invader.
Isaac seems unruffled by it, for all Roxy has been worried. He insists she won't find them as long as they keep moving and don't draw too much attention to themselves. He's usually right when it comes to the best way to handle a dangerous situation.
Roxy tries, if you'll forgive the pun, to stay buoyant. But she can't help but think he might be wrong this time.

about the jinn
- Appear human in basically every way, except that their default is floating 2-5ft off the ground. They're able to stay on the ground, sit in chairs etc but it requires a little concentration. However, if they're physically touching another being, they can 'anchor' themselves to that being's gravity. Left alone, they will either tether themselves down or sleep on ceilings, since anchored gravity can be maintained during sleep but the minor effort required to exert it themselves can't. This buoyancy means that while they are able to propel themselves across the surface of water, they can't swim or dive unless anchored or otherwise weighed down.
- Experience hunger, thirst and fatigue at around the same rate as a human. However, if they ignore these urges, the only real consequence is increasing discomfort until the urge is satisfied. As a magical being, a Jinn cannot die of hunger or thirst. Sustenance comes in the form of granting wishes. The bigger the wish, the more it 'feeds' the Jinn, and going too long (approximately a month) without granting a wish will cause them to die.
- Every wish granted comes with a catch. The bigger the wish, the bigger the catch, and the Jinn can't know what exactly the catch will be until it happens. Any and all wishes made must be phrased with the words 'I wish'. A wish made by another Jinn is ineffective, and granting the same wish to the same person multiple times will result in diminishing returns.
- Versatile magic, at a baseline weaker level when used on the Jinn's own volition. Their capabilities take a huge boost when used in granting a wish. However, Jinn magic is incapable of directly harming another person (of any of the higher races). This means that a human could walk through Jinn-created fire without sustaining any damage - but if the fire was sparked by a match created by the Jinn, the cause ceases to be direct and the result is capable of harm. There is no such restriction on harming animals, monsters, objects etc.
- Killable in basically all the same physical ways a human is able to be killed, except starving/thirst and poisoning. Generally will be time and a half as difficult to physically harm as a human of similar size/strength.

first impressions
Physical appearance: Roxy looks for all intents and purposes like a normal 20-ish year old human girl, except that she floats around a little bit like this. She's of a petite build, very little muscle mass, approximately 5'1 when standing on the ground but floating puts her at roughly either 5'8 or 6-ish inches higher than the person she's talking to. Straight blonde hair that reaches mid-back when down (though it's normally up), pink eyes, pale skin.
Dress sense: Pinterest board. In essence: light, fun, colorful, feminine, but the important thing is usually that it be comfortable. Particular fondness for patterned socks. The cold doesn't seem to get to her, because she'll go around in skirts and such regardless.
Other things: Casually confident demeanour but will visibly flinch at sudden loud noises. Smells like either soap, light floral perfume, or dirt when she's been working on her garden. Voice isn't as airy-fairy as it seems like it might be. Known to float over people's shoulders to see what they're looking at and has very little concept of personal space.

trivia
- Loves sweets, and has been spending a lot of time with Olivia learning how to make them herself. She's better at the decoration than the basics required to get a solid foundation down, but she's improving.
- Roxy and Tio are the main instigators of food fights that regularly cause the naiads to chase them out of the kitchen. She doesn't start the food fights herself, but he knows she'll join in if he does. They have something of a permanent prank war on the ship that unfortunately the others are often caught in the crossfire of.
- Tio also gave Roxy her last name, Grant, after being surprised she didn't have one.
- After one too many times running too low for comfort on food stores while between worlds or otherwise unable to refresh them, she repurposed an unused cargo hold for a kitchen garden on the ship, and loves tending to it so much that she'll spend hours in there even after she's finished her work. It's grown from a small area in the corner to taking up the entire hold, and there are not only vegetables but several different kinds of decorative plants too. Reads aloud to the plants because she's convinced they like it, and has names for most of them.
- Known to get distracted and cut herself off mid-sentence if she spots a dog nearby. She loves them, and they seem to love her too.
- Tried really hard to enjoy coffee, because it seems in her mind like such a luxury item, but just can't stomach it. She does enjoy tea though, and often seeks out new flavors. Did you know there's such a thing as peanut butter and grape jelly tea?
- Suffers from horrible nightmares ever since being liberated from Vela, all of which involve being back there or getting somehow re-captured.
- These days, she gets her wishes from Juliette. They have an arrangement where Juliette will wish for very small things multiple times, and so far the catches have been proportionately small and easy to deal with. They started out with Juliette repeatedly wishing for beads, but ran into the problem of diminishing returns, so now they try to come up with something different whenever they can.
